Supporting children with cancer/life-limiting conditions, their families & bereaved parents
A bit of background to put the importance of the support we offer into context…
There are around 1,900 children (age 0-14) diagnosed with cancer in the UK every year, that's around 5 every day. It is estimated that approximately 1 child per 500 in Great Britain will be diagnosed with cancer by age 14.The incidence of childhood cancer has risen by 8% since early 2000s and around 250 children die from cancer each year (which is nearly 5 every week).
For young people (age 15-24) there are around 2,300 new cases diagnosed in the UK each year. Approximately 1 in every 270 young people will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 20. There are around 290 young people that die every year in the UK as a result of cancer.
Combined this is over 4,000 new childhood cancer cases every year and over 500 children and young people dying from cancer.
Those numbers only include child deaths for cancer cases, when we look at the infant and child mortality rates in England and Wales from any cause, there were around 3,458 deaths in 2022 - that is 9-10 children (aged under 15) dying EVERY SINGLE DAY. This is an increase of 5% from 2019.
These incredibly distressing statistics highlight just how many families need the support of charities like ours.
