Calm Cards
Gentle relaxation activities for life’s difficult or overwhelming moments
Big feelings can be difficult to manage, particularly when a child is worried, overwhelmed or facing something unfamiliar.
Ripples of Compassion Calm Cards provide a selection of simple relaxation activities that children and young people can use at home, at school, during appointments or wherever they need a little help to pause and feel more settled.
Each card offers an accessible activity that can be chosen and used in the moment. There is no expectation to complete the cards in a particular order. A child can simply choose the activity that feels most helpful to them that day.
Who could use Calm Cards?
The cards have been created primarily for children and young people, although many of the activities can be used and enjoyed by the whole family.
They could be particularly helpful for:
Children experiencing worry, uncertainty or big emotions
Children preparing for appointments, treatment or unfamiliar situations
Children adjusting to change, loss or bereavement
Children who find transitions or busy environments overwhelming
Parents and carers looking for simple ways to support moments of calm
Schools, nurseries and pastoral-support teams
Family-support workers, counsellors, therapists and healthcare professionals
Community groups, hospices and organisations supporting children and families
A younger child may find it helpful to explore the cards alongside a trusted adult. Older children and young people may prefer to choose and use a card independently.
What can the cards be used for?
Calm Cards could be used:
Before or after a difficult appointment
When worries begin to feel overwhelming
To support a calm bedtime routine
During transitions between home, school or other settings
After a busy, upsetting or overstimulating day
As part of a classroom calm corner or wellbeing space
To introduce regular moments of relaxation as a family
Whenever a child needs a gentle opportunity to pause and reset
A simple and flexible resource
There is no single right way to feel calm, and an activity that helps on one day may not be the one a child chooses on another.
The Calm Cards allow children to explore different approaches and begin to recognise what feels helpful for them. They can be used individually, with a parent or carer, or as part of wider emotional and wellbeing support.
The cards are designed to encourage relaxation and give children some gentle choices during situations that may otherwise feel outside their control.
